Home > Technical Support > Box, Line, and Border Styles Divide Error

Error message

Selecting the Box, Line, and Border Styles item results the following error message:

FTD caused a divide by zero error in module USER.EXE.

Solution

Microsoft has posted an updated comctl32.dll file (version 4.72) on their Web site, which provides "improved stability on the Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms." Broderbund confirmed that this file is the fix for the Divide by Zero error message. Please follow the instructions below to correct the problem.

Go to the Microsoft Web site and download the update to this file. The URL is ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/40comupd.exe. All of the instructions for downloading the file are on their Web page. You end up downloading a file called 40Comupd.exe, which is a self-extracting file.

  1. Once you have downloaded the file, click the Start button, select Find, and click Files or Folders.

  2. In the Named field, type 40Comupd.exe.

Make sure that the Look in field is pointing to the drive where you saved the file (i.e. C:\, D:\, etc.).

  3. Click Find Now.

Once Windows locates the file, it displays it at the bottom of the window.

  4. Double-click the file so that Windows launches it.

  5. Click Yes when Windows asks if it should overwrite the existing file.

  6. Restart your computer.

You should now be able to use Family Tree Detective without any difficulties.
