Home > Technical Support > Which Online Service Providers are supported?

Family Tree Detective doesn't have a preference for any particular Internet Service Provider. All the program looks for and works with is your World Wide Web browser.

Commercial Online Service Providers including America Online, CompuServe, Microsoft Network, and Prodigy are not considered Internet Service Providers. They do not provide you with a direct connection to the Internet. While all of these companies provide their own browser as a regular part of their installation, some, including America Online, CompuServe, and Prodigy Internet allow you to use a browser of your choice on top of their bundled browser.

Of the major Commercial Online Service Providers Family Tree Detective only knows how to work directly with America Online. To use the Online features in Family Tree Detective through any of the other Commercial Online Services you must install Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you can use one of these browsers with your provider, you can take advantage of Family Tree Detectives's online features.

Note to WebTV users: The Family Tree Detective Online features cannot be set up to work with Web TV online services. Because these service work through your TV and not through your computer, we cannot set up a link between Family Tree Detective and this type of online service.
