Solve the Mystery of Your Family History

Home > Technical Support > How do I use a Family File stored on a Zip or Jaz Drive?

Windows knows about two kinds of drives: hard disk drives and removable disks. Anything that is not a hard drive is removable. Whether this is your floppy disk drive or a Zip/Jaz drive, Windows considers it removable. By default Family Tree Detective does not allow you to use a file stored on removable media because you can quickly create a Family File that is larger than the size of a single floppy disk. We realize that a growing number of people are using high capacity removable drives as substitutes for hard disk drives. For this reason, Family Tree Detective will allow you to use files stored on removable drives if you make the following changes.

  1. Start Family Tree Detective.

  2. From the Family Page, press down the Ctrl + F1keys.

  3. Press the arrow at the end of the Run line and select FTD.INI

  4. Look for a line that says:

    ;RemovableMedia=TRUE

  5. Remove the semicolon from the beginning of this line.

  6. From the File menu, select Save.

  7. Then from the File menu, select Exit.

This change will take place the next time you start Family Tree Detective and will allow you to create and use files on a removable drive.
