Home > Technical Support > Driver Conflicts with ATI Video Cards

Some video drivers for ATI video adapters conflict with Family Tree Detective. Running Family Tree Detective while MACXW4.DRV is installed can result in program crashes with this error:

FTD caused a General Protection Fault in module MACXW4.DRV

You can correct this issue by uninstalling this video driver and installing the latest version (Version 5.24; Date 9/23/98). The driver needed is at http://support.atitech.ca/drivers/drivers.html. Make sure you download the driver designed for your video card, and print the driver installation instructions available on that Web page.

To find out which video card you're using:

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the System icon, then click the Device Manager tab.

  3. Click the + (plus sign) next to Display Adapter to see which video card you are using.

  4. Write down the name of the display adapter (video card) and keep it close to your computer.

Decreasing Hardware Acceleration

If you continue to have problems or if you prefer not to install the driver, you can try decreasing your video card's Hardware Acceleration.

Caution: Before you make any changes, make sure you have the drivers for your video card on hand. (The driver is the software that handles the communication between the operating system, such as Windows 95, and the video card inside your computer.) You may need them if things don't work correctly and you need to revert to your original settings. The drivers should have been included on a disk or CD-ROM when you bought your computer.

To decrease your video card's Hardware Acceleration:

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the System icon.

  3. Click the Performance tab.

  4. In the Advanced settings section, click Graphics.

  5. Lower the Hardware Acceleration setting to Basic Accelerator Functions.

  6. Click OK, and then close the System Properties dialog box.

  7. Click Yes when Windows prompts you to restart your computer.

  8. Run Family Tree Detective and take another look to see if your screen appears correctly.
