  3. Click the Line Color drop-down list to select the color used to emphasize the relationship specified in step 4.

  4. When you're finished, click OK to return to the tree.

Why is there a break in the line that highlights the relationship?

Family Tree Detective can highlight the relationship between any two individuals in your Family Tree. In some cases, you may notice a break in the line connecting two people. This break occurs because the line travels through an unrelated spouse. Because Family Tree Detective emphasizes only the direct relationship, it does not highlight the line to and from the unrelated spouse.

Why do some people have boxes with dashed lines and others have solid lines?

This is related to Family Tree Detective's ability to show non-natural relationships. There are two instances where a box appears with dashed lines. The first is when a person has a non-natural relationship with his parents; the second is when the person has two sets of parents, one natural and one non-natural. If you don't want to differentiate these relationships with dotted lines, you can turn off this feature in the Tree Styles dialog box.

To use solid lines when displaying non-natural parent/child relationships:

  1. Right click your mouse on the tree, then select Box, Line, & Border Styles.

  2. Click the Lines tab.

  3. Click the Show non-natural parent/child relationships with dashed lines option to disable it.

  4. Click OK to accept the changes and return to the tree.
